Postcoital bleeding is bleeding from the vagina in women after sexual intercourse and may or may not be associated with pain. Some women will bleed after intercourse for the first time but others will not. The hymen may bleed if it is stretched since it is thin tissue. Other activities may have an effect on the vagina such as sports and tampon use. The presence of cervical polyps may result in postcoital bleeding during pregnancy because the tissue of the polyps is more easily damaged. A diagnosis to determine the cause will include obtaining a medical history and assessing the symptoms.

However, there are many benign reasons as to why it can occur. Bleeding after sex is also known as postcoital bleeding, and this is bleeding which occurs after intercourse which is not related to menstruation. To determine the cause of the bleeding, your GP or gynaecologist will usually ask questions about pain, the amount of bleeding you are experiencing, the colour of the blood, and the timing of the bleeding in relation to intercourse.
